MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) Internal Affairs Service yesterday warned the public against con men posing as IAS personnel and soliciting money in exchange for protection.
IAS chief Inspector General Brigido Dulay issued the warning after receiving complaints about people presenting themselves as IAS officials and supposedly running a protection racket targeting establishments involved in illegal activities.
The IAS reminded the public that impersonating an officer or agent of any government agency is a criminal offense under Section 135 (estafa) and Section 177 (usurpation of authority) of the Revised Penal Code.
Dulay said the IAS is working with other PNP units to arrest the bogus police personnel.
“We do not tolerate such deception that tarnishes the integrity and reputation of the PNP,” he said.
Dulay emphasized that the role of the IAS is to maintain the integrity and professionalism of PNP personnel.
He urged the public to report impostors and illegal activities involving IAS personnel.
