Kanlaon Volcano may erupt anew – Phivolcs
BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — Another phreatic eruption of Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island is possible, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
Phivolcs cited the continued increase in the volcano’s sulfur dioxide emission as a sign that another eruption is underway.
Mary Andelene Quintia, resident volcanologist at the Kanlaon Observatory, said the volcano spewed 3,007 tons of sulfur dioxide on Sunday.
Quintia said the possibility of a phreatic eruption, similar to what occurred on June 3, is highly possible.
She said magmatic processes beneath the volcano could be driving the current level of unrest, causing high concentrations of volcanic gas emissions and swelling of the edifice.
State seismologists said they recorded five volcanic earthquakes around Kanlaon yesterday.
Entry into the volcano’s four-kilometer-radius danger zone remains prohibited.
