MANILA, Philippines — Even with the availability of prophylaxis, the Department of Health (DOH) has advised the public to refrain from wading in floodwaters to prevent leptospirosis.

Health Assistant Secretary Alberto Domingo said prophylaxis is not an “amulet” or a “license” for people to wade in floodwaters.

“Yes, there is a drug against leptospirosis. The most common is antibiotic,” Domingo said.

“But just because there is one, it does not mean that it is like an amulet that will allow you to dip into floodwaters,” he added.

According to Domingo, a person needs to consult with a medical professional before using prophylaxis to treat leptospirosis.

The DOH has recorded a surge in leptospirosis cases nationwide.
