MANILA, Philippines — A man ended up in jail after he allegedly splashed muriatic acid at a resident of San Juan who was celebrating the city’s “Wattah Wattah” festival on Monday.

Bonifacio Serrano Jr., 33, is being held on charges of physical injury after he spattered Alexander Severo, 30, with the corrosive acid.

Police said the incident occurred at the corner of Aurora Boulevard and S. Veloso street in Barangay Salapan at around 9:30 a.m.

Serrano, of Barangay Cupang in Antipolo City, Rizal, allegedly splashed residents with muriatic acid.

Severo sought help after the acid hit his eyes.

Police who were providing security during the festival apprehended Serrano.

The suspect was taken to the police station for investigation.

The Wattah Wattah festival is an annual event honoring San Juan City’s patron saint, St. John the Baptist.

The traditional “basaan” or pouring of water has been criticized by the public due to the rowdy behavior of San Juan residents who throw pails of water at commuters and motorists.

Some of the festival’s participants blocked and climbed vehicles.
