MANILA, Philippines — Students from public and private schools across the country bagged 37 medals during the International Mathematics Wizards Challenge (IMWIC) in Indonesia over the weekend.
The Mathematics Trainers’ Guild Philippines (MTG), which trained the students the country sent to the IMWIC, said the math wizards brought home two gold, 12 silver, 16 bronze and seven merit medals.
MTG head Simon Chua said all students from the Philippines each won a medal.
Chua praised the students for “showing their high competence in math.”
He added that math tilts serve as platforms in “nurturing young minds who have an apparent ease with numbers.”
The IMWIC drew nearly 300 contestants from 10 nations. Up to 120 students from Hong Kong, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines joined the competition in Bogor, Indonesia.
Six other countries – China, Taiwan, Macau, Malaysia, Vietnam and Laos – participated online.
Math specialists Archie Rodriguez and Enerio Sagusay headed the Philippine delegation.
Twenty other MTG-trained students will represent the country in the Global Math Competition, slated from June 29 to July 2 in Vietnam.
