MANILA, Philippines — Taal Volcano in Batangas is expected to continue to emit gas after it showed increased activity on Saturday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

Phivolcs director Teresito Bacolcol yesterday said that Taal’s sulfur dioxide emission would continue for five years from the day it erupted in 2020.

“If we compare it to a volcano that erupted in Japan, it took five years before the sulfur dioxide or steaming subsided. The same is expected with Taal, its sulfur dioxide emission and steaming will persist,” Bacolcol said.

Phivolcs said the degassing, which generated plumes that rose 2,400 meters and drifted northwest, was monitored between 1:30 a.m. and 7:55 a.m. on Saturday.

“It was raining when Taal emitted gas on Saturday and the rain contributed to the steaming.  Hot materials came in contact with water and the steaming was strong, but it did not form vog or volcanic fog,” Bacolcol said.

He said people living near Taal have been advised to wear face masks, preferably N95.

Entry into the Taal Volcano Island remains prohibited.
