23 volcanic quakes logged around Bulusan
MANILA, Philippines — Up to 23 volcanic earthquakes have been recorded around Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon in the past 24 hours, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
Phivolcs said the figure was higher compared to 20 temblors it recorded in the past two weeks.
It said Bulusan’s sulfur dioxide and plume emissions remain low and moderate, respectively.
Alert Level 1 remains in effect over Bulusan. This means entry into the four- kilometer-radius permanent danger zone around the volcano is prohibited.
Airmen have been advised to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as any sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruption is hazardous to aircrafts.
Meanwhile, state volcanologists recorded four volcanic earthquakes around Kanlaon Volcano in Negros.
Kanlaon emitted 3,935 tons of sulfur dioxide per day, while its plume emission is moderate at 250 meters high.
Alert Level 2 remains in effect of the volcano.
Phivolcs director Teresito Bacolcol said the agency needed to observe the activity of Kanlaon before it could increase or decrease the alert level, which remained at Level 2.
Bacolcol said volcanologists have yet to confirm whether the volcano’s restiveness has reached its peak.
