BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — Cases of influenza and dengue in the Cordilleras have been increasing at an alarming rate, according to the Department of Health (DOH) regional office.

Data from the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (RESU) of the DOH said a majority of the influenza cases were recorded in this city and Benguet, with 2,801 and 3,309, respectively.

Kalinga logged 794 cases; Apayao, 306; Abra, 143; Ifugao, 130, and Mountain Province, 99.

Victoria Malicdan, Baguio and Benguet RESU chief,  said most of the patients are children while the oldest is 101 years old.

The DOH said dengue cases rose to 2,122 from January to June 1, which is 72 percent higher compared to last year.

Benguet recorded 759 cases; Baguio, 468; Mountain Province, 320; Apayaop, 207; Ifugao,196; Abra, 888, and Kalinga, 75.

The DOH has warned the public against dengue-carrying mosquitoes, which are prevalent during the rainy season.
