MMDA: 10 holiday road mishaps

MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) recorded 10 road crash incidents along major roads in Metro Manila yesterday as the country observed Independence Day, a public holiday.

During public holidays, the number coding policy or the unified vehicular volume reduction program is lifted. This means all vehicles can use public roads and major thoroughfares become less congested compared to regular days.

The MMDA responded to two crash incidents along C-5 Road. One involved a motorcycle, an Asian utility vehicle and a closed van near Ortigas Avenue. The other incident was a taxi sideswiping a motorcycle near Miriam College at past 7 a.m.

Three motorcycle riders were injured in separate “self-accidents” at the intersection of Commonwealth and Regalado and at the intersection of Quezon Avenue and Agham Road at past 10:30 a.m., the MMDA reported.

A taxi, a sport utility vehicle and a motorcycle figured in a smashup along E. Rodriguez Avenue near its intersection with Araneta Avenue in Quezon City at past 11 a.m.

A passenger jeepney and a passenger bus hit plant boxes, bollards and barriers in separate incidents at the intersections of Commonwealth and Luzon Avenues and EDSA and Gil Puyat Avenue at past noon.

A car rear-ended another car along C-5 Libis tunnel at 1:30 p.m.

Road crashes were also reported along Aurora Avenue near Katipunan Avenue involving a van and a car, as well as along Commonwealth Avenue near Ever Gotesco involving a car and a UV Express van, both before 3 p.m.

The road accidents caused slow-moving traffic along the affected roads that lasted for less than 30 minutes, according to the MMDA.

The injured motorists were rushed to the nearest hospitals, the MMDA added.
