MALOLOS , Philippines —  The water level in Angat Dam continued to drop yesterday despite heavy rainfall in its watershed and parts of Bulacan on Wednesday.

Records from the Bulacan Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) showed that the dam’s water level was at 178.13 meters compared to 178.26 meters the previous day.

The water elevation was 1.87 meters below its minimum operating level of 180 meters.

Lawrence Nipales, principal engineer of the National Power Corp., briefed PDRRMO officials on the status of the dam on Wednesday.

Nipales explained that water supply is reserved for the needs of Metro Manila residents once the dam’s elevation falls below 180 meters.

Angat Dam supplies 90 percent of Metro Manila’s potable water needs.

Nipales said the dam also stops providing the Luzon grid with 200 megawatts of power because the four main generators lose their capability to produce hydropower when the water level is below its minimum operating level.

He said irrigation supply to rice fields in Bulacan and parts of Pampanga is also stopped.
