VIGAN CITY, Ilocos Sur, Philippines — Mayor Brigido Camarillo of Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur has been suspended for 60 days for gross negligence and dereliction of duty.

Gov. Jeremias Singson signed a resolution of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan recommending Camarillo’s suspension in connection with the charges filed by members of the town council.

Citing preliminary evaluation of the charges, the provincial board said it found “strong evidence of guilt” against Camarillo.

”Given the gravity of the offense, there is great probability that his continuance in office could influence or pressure the witnesses or pose a threat to the safety and integrity of the records and other evidence,” the suspension order read.

Camarillo’s suspension was effective starting June 1.

The case against Camarillo was filed on Jan. 26 after he allegedly failed to take action against an erring municipal treasurer, tolerated absentee employees and refused to take action on issues  concerning the town.

He was also accused of failing to convene meetings as mandated by law aside from unjustified absence from office.

Vice Mayor Michael Florendo took over as acting mayor.
