2 NPA rebels killed, soldier wounded in South Cotabato
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — Two New People’s Army (NPA) rebels were killed while a soldier was wounded in a shootout in South Cotabato on Thursday, according to the police.
Reports reaching the Area Police Command-Western Mindanao said members of the T’Boli police and the military’s 10th Special Forces Company were serving an arrest warrant for Yasser Catacutan and Eizar Emam in Barangay Talcon when they were fired at.
Authorities said a caliber .45 pistol and an improvised explosive device were recovered from the fatalities.
Meanwhile, police said 16 supporters of NPA rebels surrendered in Dumingag, Zamboanga del Sur.
Brig. Gen. Bowenn Joey Masauding, Zamboanga peninsula police director, said the surrender was a result of operations conducted by members of the Zamboanga del Sur Provincial Mobile Force Company.
Masauding said the surrenderees served either as informants, spies, mass organizers or food couriers of the defunct Guerrilla Front Big Beautiful Country of the Western Mindanao Revolutionary Party Committee of the NPA.
He said the rebel returnees received groceries and cash gifts.
