MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority yesterday launched the first MMDA Cup, a sports event featuring basketball and volleyball, at the FilOil EcoOil Center in San Juan.

“The event aims to foster camaraderie and promote an active lifestyle among government employees,” the MMDA said.

The opening ceremony was led by acting MMDA Chairman Romando Artes, Interior and Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos, San Juan Mayor Francis Zamora and Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna.

University of Santo Tomas men’s basketball team coach Pido Jarencio serves as the tournament director.

In his speech, Artes said the event celebrates the sportsmanship and camaraderie among employees of local government units (LGUs).

Meanwhile, the MMDA said it plans to coordinate with LGUs in Metro Manila for the conduct of cleanup activities in preparation for the rainy season.

The MMDA has identified 80 flood-prone areas in the region, including Taft Avenue in Manila and Araneta Avenue in Quezon City.

According to Artes, massive flooding during heavy rains is primarily caused by trash and inadequate drainage systems.
