BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — Two policemen in Negros Occidental and another in Aklan have been relieved from their posts for allegedly receiving protection money from financiers of illegal gambling.
Police officials said the three, who were not identified, have been transferred to the Regional Personnel Holding Accounting Unit at Camp Martin Delgado in Iloilo while investigations are ongoing.
Brig. Gen. Jack Wanky, Western Visayas police director, had earlier said that no one would be spared in the campaign against all forms of illegal gambling.
Last month, 246 people were arrested for illegal gambling in Negros Occidental.
“I have been telling my personnel not to engage in illegal gambling as they will face stricter sanctions should evidence warrant action against them,” Wanky said. ”I ordered these three officers relieved while the investigation is underway.”
He said the immediate superiors of the three police officers would also be investigated for command responsibility.
