MANILA, Philippines — An ambulant vendor was arrested after he allegedly stole a police officer’s cell phone in Quezon City on Thursday night.

The suspect, Noe Zafe Jr., 41, is being held on a charge of theft filed before the office of the city prosecutor.

The incident occurred along a street in Barangay Payatas at around 10:25 p.m., police investigators said.

The victim, Pat. John Patrick Talantor of the Payatas Bagong Silangan police station, and another police officer left their patrol vehicle to load motorcycles – impounded after being pulled over at an anti-crime checkpoint – onto another vehicle.

While the two police officers were busy, Zafe approached the patrol car and took Talantor’s iPhone 14 worth P68,000.

Zafe tried to escape, but the police officers saw his act and arrested him after a brief chase.

Talantor took his cell phone from Zafe, who was brought to the police station for investigation.
