LTO: 10,000 traffic violators nabbed in Metro
MANILA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Office (LTO) apprehended more than 10,000 motorists for violating traffic laws in Metro Manila in the first three months of 2024.
The government generated at least P26.5 million in revenue from traffic fines, LTO National Capital Region director Roque Verzosa III reported yesterday.
The figure is more than 200 percent higher compared to the total revenue collection in the same period of 2023, according to Verzosa.
He said the number of apprehended motorists in the first quarter of the year was 186 percent higher compared to the 3,662 violators accosted in the first quarter of 2023.
Verzosa said 8,682 motorists were apprehended for violating traffic laws from January to March 2024.
He said 4,982 motorists were nabbed for violating Republic Act 4136 or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code, including 764 unregistered motor vehicles, and the “no registration, no travel” policy.
According to Verzosa, 1,412 motorists were held for driving vehicles with defective accessories, devices, equipment or parts.
Other violations include driving while wearing slippers, 699; failure to carry OR/CR while driving, 556; reckless driving, 378; driving without a valid license, 221; disregarding traffic signs,139, and obstruction,124.
The LTO said 2,584 motorists were apprehended for not using seat belt, in violation of RA 8750.
Verzosa said 1,064 motorists faced fines for not wearing the standard protective motorcycle helmet; 39 for non-compliance with the Children Safety on Motorcycle law; 12 for violating the Anti-Distracted Driving Act, and one for driving under the influence of illegal drugs.
