35,000 cops deployed for Holy Week exodus
MANILA, Philippines — At least 35,000 police officers would be deployed to secure the expected exodus of people for the Holy Week, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. said yesterday.
“As millions of Filipinos show their devotion, the DILG and the Philippine National Police (PNP) will continue to be on alert to ensure the safety of our devotees during the Holy Week,” he said.
Abalos said at least 35,000 police officers were deployed yesterday and from March 28 to 31 at churches, pilgrim sites, tourist destinations, airport, bus terminals and piers.
“We will deploy 427 police service dogs in these areas to help in the monitoring and inspection of baggage,” he added.
Abalos noted that the PNP would also conduct checkpoint operations in strategic areas, aside from red-teaming operations with the regional and provincial disaster risk reduction and management councils in preparation for possible accidents and untoward incidents.
At the same time, Abalos reminded the public to be on alert against criminals who would take advantage of the Holy Week celebration.
“We are advising the public to be careful and be on alert to prevent accidents and avoid being victims of crimes. Be vigilant and stay safe this Holy Week,” Abalos added.
