Catapang tightens security after ambush

MANILA, Philippines — Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) chief Gregorio Catapang Jr. yesterday said security measures were doubled following the recent shooting incident involving his vehicle along the Skyway on Tuesday.

“Of course, we doubled our security. My movements – they are being carefully planned to avoid a repeat of the incident. We don’t want our families to worry,” Catapang said in a chance interview.

When asked who could be behind the attack, Catapang said there are many “angles” to look at.

“You all know the challenges BuCor is facing. There are many threats. The BuCor is really facing many challenges that I can’t talk about. The problem in the bureau is really deep,” he said.

While Catapang emphasized he does not suspect anyone, he said former BuCor chief Gerald Bantag could be a “person of interest.”

Bantag is wanted for allegedly masterminding the killing of broadcaster Percy Lapid.

“I’m not suspecting anyone. But as you all saw, when I assumed the post, he had something against us. Maybe he could be a person of interest. Something like that,” Catapang said.

Despite the incident, Catapang affirmed his commitment to implement reforms in the bureau.

“It’s all part of the job. We have a mission,” he said.
