MANILA, Philippines — The Manila International Airport Authority is scheduled to remove all the gang chairs at the arrival lobby of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 (NAIA-3) after Holy Week, MIAA general manager Eric Ines said yesterday.

“We can no longer distinguish between legitimate welcomers and strangers who just want to make themselves comfortable. They sleep on the gang chairs in the lobby,” he said.

Ines speculated that some of the people loitering in the lobby are “spotters” for thieves targeting foreign tourists and balikbayans.

The gang chairs would be placed outside the airport entrance, according to Ines, who clarified that the MIAA would not prevent welcomers from entering the lobby but is “just securing the area from bad elements of society.”

He also said there would be several flight information displays near the NAIA-3 gates.

Ines also canceled the purchase of P90 million worth of gang chairs, which he claimed was done by the bidding committee without his knowledge.
