Ilocos Sur jail guard shot dead

CAMP FLORENDO, La Union, Philippines — A jail guard was gunned down on his way to work in Barangay Taleb in Bantay, Ilocos Sur on Monday.

Prison Guard 3 Jayson Parchmento, 45, a former policeman, was driving his car when he was shot.

Eight bullet shells for a caliber .45 pistol were recovered at the scene.

Probers have yet to determine the motive for the killing.

In Batangas, Marlyn Escartin, 51, was walking on her way home when she was shot dead by motorcycle-riding men in Barangay Pag-Olingin West in Lipa City.

Lt. Col. Rex Villareal, Lipa City police chief, said probers are eyeing a grudge as the motive for the killing.

Villareal said a witness has come forward and identified the gunman.
