La Trinidad, Benguet, Philippines — The monthlong Strawberry Festival in this town has started.

Mayor Romeo Salda urged local and foreign tourists to visit the town to experience and enjoy its various attractions and culture, including different variants of strawberries.

On March 20, 2004, La Trinidad received a Guinness World Record certificate for baking the world’s largest strawberry shortcake. The cake weighed 9,622.29 kilos or 21,210.40 pounds.

Councilor Belmer Elis proposed a resolution encouraging barangays, business establishments and government offices to put up colorful decorations featuring locally grown strawberries to celebrate the festival.

Among the highlights of the celebration are a street dancing competition, heaviest and sweetest strawberries contest, a float parade and serving of 10,000 strawberry cupcakes.

The municipal government has asked President Marcos to declare March 15 a holiday in the town to allow residents and tourists to celebrate the festival.
