Tanker leaks hydrochloric acid in Manila
MANILA, Philippines — A chemical tanker containing 3,000 liters of concentrated hydrochloric acid developed a leak along Quirino Avenue in Manila before dawn yesterday.
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) reported that the incident prompted the closure of portions of Quirino Avenue’s northbound lane from Osmeña Highway to Pedro Gil street.
Rescue personnel tended to tanker driver Dominador Evangelista, 36, and his passenger, who was not identified.
The driver claimed that the tanker’s chassis broke as he was driving the vehicle to Bulacan from Laguna, ABS-CBN reported.
Senior Inspector Charles Bococo of the Manila Special Rescue Force told GMA News that the truck’s speed and the bumps along Quirino Avenue may have been factors in the tanker’s breakdown.
