3 dog killers fined P6,000

Ric Sapnu - The Philippine Star

ANGELES CITY , Philippines —  Three people have been found guilty of animal cruelty for killing a dog for their personal consumption.

Amorsolo David Guevarra, Renato Halili and Jerry Mari, who pleaded guilty to violating Republic Act 8485 or the Animal Welfare Act, were ordered to pay a fine of P6,000 each by the Angeles City Municipal Trial Court.

The decision was promulgated on Feb. 13.

Dr. Christian Xyric Arcilla of the city veterinary office, who reportedly witnessed the cruelty inflicted by the three on the animal, filed the case.

Mayor Carmelo Lazatin Jr. hailed the conviction, saying it was a victory for the cause of animal welfare.

“Angeles City is a refuge for stray canines and felines rescued by the city veterinary office. I hope this victory will serve as a deterrent to those who would commit similar acts of cruelty,” Lazatin said.
