Quakes rock Cagayan, Southern Leyte

Phivolcs said the quakes, which were tectonic in origin, were not expected to cause damage or generate aftershocks.

MANILA, Philippines — Earthquakes of magnitudes 4.7 and 4 jolted the provinces of Cagayan and Southern Leyte, respectively, yesterday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

Phivolcs said the quakes, which were tectonic in origin, were not expected to cause damage or generate aftershocks.

The temblor in Cagayan occurred at 2:22 a.m. Its epicenter was located 56 kilometers north of Dalupiri Island in Calayan town.

Meanwhile, the quake in Southern Leyte occurred at 4:13 a.m. and its epicenter was located nine kilometers north of Malitbog town.

Instrumental Intensities 4 and 3 were recorded in Malitbog and Sogod towns, respectively.
