MANILA, Philippines — A security guard was arrested after he reportedly shot dead a man who attacked his cousin during a fight in Ermita, Manila on Thursday night.

Arsito Santamen repeatedly hacked at the head of vendor Acmad Ignacio, 31, using a 30-inch bolo near the latter’s stall at the corner of Mabini and Pedro Gil streets at around 7:40 p.m., the Manila Police District (MPD) reported.

Security guard Arnel John Barcoma, 33, who is assigned at a nearby hotel, tried to break up the fight by firing a warning shot.

Santamen then turned on Barcoma, police said. The guard shot at Santamen using his service firearm, a 9mm pistol, “to defend himself,” police said.

Santamen died at the scene while Ignacio passed away at the Ospital ng Maynila.

Police recovered the bolo, Barcoma’s gun and two bullet casings at the scene.

The MPD’s homicide section took Barcoma into custody pending an investigation.
