MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is looking to issue identification cards for registered Filipino voters again.

“Hopefully, we can distribute voter’s IDs to overseas Filipinos before the year ends,” Comelec Chairman George Garcia told reporters yesterday.

He said that Filipinos abroad need the ID more than those staying in the country.

Garcia said the Comelec has a budget that can be realigned for the procurement of IDs for registered voters but the commission’s members will have to discuss the details of such a project.

The Comelec indefinitely suspended in 2017 the generation and distribution of voter’s ID cards in anticipation of the introduction of the national ID system.

Garcia, however, noted that many Filipinos are still unable to get their national ID until this time.
