MANILA, Philippines — The city government of Taguig asserted yesterday that Makati did not give any prior notice before closing its daycare centers in the enlisted men’s barrio or “embo” barangays.

This was in response to Makati’s earlier statement, saying Taguig was notified about the closure as early as Dec. 31 last year.

“Makati’s claim that they gave an early notice is a lie,” Taguig city hall said in a statement.

Taguig pointed out that when Makati administrator Claro Certeza issued the statement, he failed to specify when or how the notice was given to Taguig.

Taguig also noted that officials of the city’s social welfare development office had been reaching out to Makati as early as November 2023 to conduct a meeting for an orderly transition.

However, Makati “avoided” all invitations for a meeting, reasoning out that a writ of execution must first be issued by a court.

“Because Makati did not want to coordinate, the meeting did not push through. The result: the closure of daycare centers,” the Taguig government said.

Following the closure, Taguig announced that daycare centers in the “embo” barangays had been designated to nearby public elementary schools in the city.

In a 2021 ruling that was affirmed in 2023, the Supreme Court granted Taguig jurisdiction over the 10 “embo” barangays that were previously under Makati.
