Quakes rock Mindanao areas

MANILA, Philippines — Earthquakes rocked areas in Davao del Sur and Davao Oriental as well as Surigao del Sur yesterday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

Phivolcs said a magnitude 4.3 quake jolted Davao del Sur at 9:19 a.m. The quake’s epicenter was located five kilometers south of Magsaysay town.

Instrumental Intensities 3, 2 and 1 were recorded in Magsaysay and Digos City, Davao del Sur; Malungon, Sarangani, and Banga, South Cotabato, respectively.

Another magnitude 4.1 quake rocked Surigao del Sur at 6:37 a.m. Its epicenter was located 13 kilometers south of Marihatag. Instrumental Intensity 1 was recorded in Tandag City.

Earlier in the day, a magnitude 4.2 temblor rocked Davao Oriental at 2:43 a.m. Its epicenter was located 17 kilometers south of Governor Generoso.

Phivolcs said the quakes were tectonic in origin and were not expected to generate aftershocks.
