MANILA, Philippines — Three years after former president Rodrigo Duterte asked him to seek public office, television host Willie Revillame on Sunday declared he is ready to run for senator in next year’s midterm elections.
Revillame attended the prayer rally against Charter change led by the Dutertes and their allies in Davao City’s Rizal Park.
According to Revillame, he was asked by Duterte and Sen. Bong Go in 2001 to be a part of the senatorial slate of then administration party PDP-Laban.
Revilla said he turned down the offer because of his contract with TV network GMA7 where his program “Wowowin” aired.
“I told then president Duterte that I would think about it,” Revillame said.
He said Duterte did not force him to run for senator.
During the prayer rally and leaders’ meeting in Davao City on Sunday, Revillame announced his bid for a Senate seat in 2025.
“Dear president (Duterte), I am praying for this. I am ready to serve the people now, especially those in need,” the TV host said.
Revillame thanked Duterte for his trust and support.
