BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — The city government of Baguio is rushing plans for the construction of several multi-level parking buildings to accommodate more visitors.

Mayor Benjamin Magalong said he has been meeting with local officials regularly to fast-track the completion of the facilities.

“We have identified 13 areas for the establishment of these facilities that will generate around P7,000 of the targeted 14,000 public parking slots,” he said.

The city has only 2,700 public parking spaces for an estimated 56,000 registered vehicles, including 15,000 motorcycles.

To mitigate the lack of parking spaces, the city government needs to deploy more traffic personnel and law enforcement officers as well as remind visitors to use public transport instead of private vehicles when visiting the summer capital.

Thousands of tourists are expected to converge in the city for this year’s Baguio Flower Festival or Panagbenga.

The month-long festivity will commence from Feb. 1 to the first week of March.
