Manila council OKs preserving Mali’s remains

Ghio Ong - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The city council of Manila passed a resolution on Thursday authorizing Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan to enter into a contract with a taxidermy firm to preserve the remains of Mali, Manila Zoo’s elephant and main attraction.

Twenty-one of the 38 councilors present during the council session approved the draft measure fileed by District 3 Councilor Ernesto Isip Jr., who is also the council’s majority floor leader.

Draft Resolution 7925 authorized the mayor to enter into a contract of service with Pet Preservation Taxidermy Service to preserve Mali for free.

The firm was tasked to complete the taxidermy within “six to eight months or depending on the size of Mali,” the draft added.

Mali’s preserved remains “shall be exhibited in the Manila Zoo” after the taxidermy process, it also said.

Donated by Sri Lanka to the Philippines in 1981, Mali died of congestive heart failure and pancreatic cancer on Nov. 28, 2023.
