MANILA, Philippines — Up to 40 percent of onion farmers in Central Luzon have been affected by an infestation of armyworms.

In a radio interview, Nueva Ecija Onion Growers Association board member Jimmy Vistar said armyworms have infested farms in major onion producing areas.

Vistar said 40 percent of farmers were affected in Occidental Mindoro and Tarlac as well as 30 percent in Nueva Ecija and Pangasinan.

Vistar said affected farmers are also struggling to sell their produce as farmgate prices of onion ranged from P10 to P15 per kilo.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. confirmed the delay in the arrival of imported onions despite the Dec. 31, 2023 deadline.

He said only 99 metric tons of 21,000 MT that were imported arrived from Jan. 1 to 15.
