Magnitude 5.0 aftershock jolts Surigao del Sur

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.0 earthquake, said to be another aftershock of the magnitude 7.4 temblor that hit Surigao del Sur on Dec. 2 last year, hit the province on Monday night.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the quake was recorded 31 kilometers northeast of Hinatuan town at 7:31 a.m.

The quake was felt at Intensity 4 in Hinatuan and Intensity 3 in Bislig.

Instrumental Intensity 2 was recorded in Bislig and Intensity 1 in Tandag City.

More than 5,000 aftershocks have been recorded since the quake struck.

Three persons died in Caraga and Davao regions due to the quake.

Damage to infrastructure was estimated at P1.1 billion.
