MANILA, Philippines — At least 600 families were left homeless when a fire broke out at a residential area in Pandacan, Manila yesterday.

In a report, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said around 160 houses along West Zamora street in Barangay 850 were destroyed.

The BFP raised the first alarm at around 5:57 a.m.

The fire reached fourth alarm after an hour before it was contained at around 8:26 a.m., Manila Fire Department marshal Senior Supt. Christine Doctor-Cula said.

Prince Adrian Cayago, 19, was brought to the Ospital ng Maynila after she suffered head injuries, according to the BFP.

Cula said firefighters encountered difficulty in putting out the blaze because of narrow alleys and low water pressure in the nearest fire hydrant.

Damage to property was placed at P2.6 million. The fire caused traffic jams along the northbound lane of Quirino Avenue.

Arson probers have yet to confirm if illegal electricity connections in the area sparked the fire.
