BAGUIO CITY, Philippines —  Water sources in this city are being tested amid a surge in acute gastroenteritis cases.

Aside from the city health services office and Baguio Water District (BWD), the police was tasked to help speed up water testing.

“Test as many as we can and get results as soon as possible,” Mayor Benjamin Magalong said. ”The common denominator among the incidents must be identified to get to the bottom of the problem, identify the cause and source of the contamination as well as address this health problem.”

The Baguio City public information office said 80 households, where around 175 incidents were reported, are included in the testing.

The BWD is testing its 67 water sources while the sanitation division of the city government is testing water delivery stations linked to reported cases.

Food establishments with reported cases were ordered to serve only purified water to their customers.

As of yesterday, the city epidemiology surveillance unit said it recorded 1,500 cases of gastroenteritis.
