Magnitude 5.7 quake jolts Surigao Del Sur

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.7 quake jolted Cagwait town in Surigao Del Sur shortly after midnight yesterday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

According to the state bureau, the tremor was located 74 kilometers north of Cagwait, with a depth of focus of 10 km.

Instrumental Intensity 1 was recorded in Cabadbaran City, Agusan del Norte; San Fernando, Bukidnon; Nabunturan, Davao de Oro, and Tandag City, Surigao Del Sur.

Late on Saturday, Phivolcs also recorded a magnitude 5.2 quake that jolted the province’s Lingig town. It said that Intensity 3 was felt in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur and Instrumental Intensity 4 in Nabunturan, Davao de Oro.

Although it does not expect any damage, Phivolcs warned residents of more possible aftershocks.

Both quakes came as aftershocks of the magnitude 6.8 quake in Cagwait town on Dec. 4 and magnitude 7.4 quake in Hinatuan town on Dec. 2.

Based on Phivolcs data, more than 5,000 aftershocks were recorded following the tremor in Hinatuan and more than 2,000 aftershocks after the tremor in Cagwait.
