MANILA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Office (LTO) is urging motorists to always wear seatbelts while inside the car, especially amid the exodus for the holidays.

LTO-National Capital Region director Roque Versoza said that the agency would crack down on motorists who fail to wear seatbelts.

A total of 1,179 motorists have been apprehended for not wearing seatbelts during intensified operations in the runup to the holidays, he added.

“Using a seatbelt is crucial for safety in a vehicle. It restrains passengers during sudden stops or collisions, preventing ejection and reducing the risk of serious injuries or fatalities,” he said.

A total of 3,524 apprehensions were made by the LTO-NCR in a month since November, majority of which was due to the failure to wear seatbelts.

There were also 600 motorists apprehended for not wearing a helmet while 480 were apprehended for driving unregistered vehicles.

A total fine collection of P11.4 million was recorded during this period.

“Adhering to traffic rules and transportation laws is not just a legal obligation but a collective responsibility for the safety of all road users. In 2024, we aim for fewer road traffic violations, creating a safer and more secure environment for everyone,” Versoza said.
