PNP identifies 101 firecracker zones in Central Luzon

SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, Philippines — At least 101 firecracker zones and 87 fireworks display areas have been identified in Central Luzon.

Police said the number may increase as the New Year celebration approaches.

Last year, police said there were 225 firecracker zones and 88 fireworks display areas in Central Luzon.

Under Executive Order No. 28 issued by former president Rodrigo Duterte on June 20, 2017, local government units were tasked to designate community fireworks display areas.

The EO also provides for the regulation and control on the use of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices.

Fireworks stakeholders had earlier appealed to Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos not to implement a nationwide ban on firecrackers.

Philippine Fireworks Association president Jovenson Ong said the government should instead clamp down on illegal manufacturers and the entry of smuggled substandard fireworks.

Legitimate fireworks dealers and manufacturers comply with the standards set by the Department of Trade’s Bureau of Product Standards, Ong said.

Meanwhile, the Central Luzon police continues to intensify police visibility, especially at transport terminals to ensure the safety of commuters during the holidays.

Brig. Gen. Jose Hidalgo Jr., Central Luzon police director, said additional personnel were deployed in places of convergence such as churches, malls and public markets.

Hidalgo urged the public to stay alert and immediately report any suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies.
