Jail summit seen to improve PDLs’ well-being
MANILA, Philippines — A partylist lawmaker is hopeful that the country’s jail system will become better following the holding of the Jail Decongestion Summit recently.
In a statement, Bicol Saro partylist Rep. Brian Yamsuan said the recommendations agreed upon during the summit would be put in place to improve the living conditions and well-being of persons deprived of liberty (PDLs).
Yamsuan said the summit did not only focus on the incarceration of PDLs, but also in rehabilitating and providing them livelihood opportunities.
He expressed hope that the proposals raised during the summit would result in the passage of measures intended to unifty the country’s “fragmented correctional system” under a single agency.
He said the whole-of-government approach of President Marcos is vital in ensuring an efficient, effective and compassionate administration of justice in the country.
