ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — Intensified security measures continue along borders and all ports of entry in this city to thwart possible terrorist attacks similar to the recent one in Marawi, Lanao del Sur.
The local police suspended all leaves of its officers and personnel, while those taking their breaks were ordered to report to stations in their localities to maximize police presence, according to Lt. Col. Paul Andrew Cortes, spokesman for the Zamboanga City police.
Intelligence units, both from the police and the military, are monitoring movements of terrorist group Dawlah Islamiyah and remnants of the Abu Sayyaf in Western Mindanao.
“Since the alert was raised last week, we have not intercepted any terror threat, but we are not discounting the possibility. That’s why we are continuously intensifying our security measures,” Cortes said.
Police said they are not letting their guard down, noting the city was previously hit by sympathy attacks from terror groups.
Cortes said increased police visibility is being implemented in public places such as parks, transport terminals, churches and other areas frequented by people.
The alert status will ensure a peaceful celebration of the Yuletide, he said.
