MANILA, Philippines — Maynilad Water Services Inc. has adjusted the chemical dosages in its treatment plants after several customers complained of having yellowish water coming out of their taps.

“We started addressing the yellowish discoloration in the water supply. Our field teams are also doing simultaneous flushing activities in the network to further ease the discoloration,” Maynilad said in a statement yesterday.

Several Maynilad customers took to social media to complain about the yellowish water from their faucets.

Maynilad said it received reports of yellowish water supply in the northern and central parts of its concession area.

The water firm explained that the yellowish water supply was due to the existence of manganese.

“This appears to be a result of the reaction of manganese with chlorine in the water. Dissolved manganese in water may turn the liquid yellow, and on to a darker shade when exposed to oxygen — much like a peeled apple turns brown upon contact with air,” Maynilad said.

The company said it remains compliant with water standards.

“Except for the discoloration, we would like to assure affected customers that our water supply is still within the parameters set by the Philippine National Standards for Drinking Water,” Maynilad said.

Maynilad is the largest private water concessionaire in the Philippines in terms of customer base, serving over 1.5 million billed service connections or about 9.6 million people.
