CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines — Four persons died when their car crashed into a truck in Antipolo, Rizal before dawn yesterday.

The fatalities were identified as car driver Juanito Cataylo, 22, and his companions Ereneo Balmonte, 22; Lawrence Ivan Jose, 21, and Kidrock John Magsino, 21, all of Antipolo.

Truck driver Glen Gumban, 48, of Marikina City, was arrested by responding policemen and is now detained at the Antipolo Custodial Facility.

Gumban will be charged with reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide and damage to property, according to Capt. Mariesol Tactaquin, spokesperson for the Rizal police.

Investigation showed the car and the truck were traveling along the Marcos Highway at around 3 a.m. The car reportedly developed engine trouble, causing the driver to lose control of the wheel.

Antipolo police chief Ryan Manongdo said probers have yet to determine if the vehicles were engaged in a drag race.

Manongdo said they have yet to review footage of a closed-circuit television camera installed in the area.
