Retain barangay health workers, Tolentino asks village execs
CAVITE, Philippines — Sen. Francis Tolentino appealed to newly elected barangay officials not to replace barangay health workers (BHWs).
In his program on NET 25, Tolentino commended BHWs for their dedication and commitment to serve as well as for risking their lives and safety to deliver healthcare services even in locked down communities and infected households during the COVID pandemic.
He cited the extensive knowledge and skills that BHWs have acquired aside from the crucial role they played in managing community health during the pandemic.
Tolentino stressed that knowledge and skills in public health cannot be acquired overnight.
He said there should be a longer transition period before BHWs should be replaced.
Tolentino said newly appointed health workers should have adequate training before assuming their post.
“If I were to be asked, I would definitely push for the inclusion of BHWs in our national health care system. Retaining these BHWs will allow for continuity in community health care services and shielding BHWs from political discrimination and undue pressure,” the senator said.
