Coin toss breaks tie in SK chair race

Ric Sapnu - The Philippine Star

SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, Philippines — A coin toss decided the winner as Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) chairman in two barangays in Aurora and Zambales.

Alex John Agabao was proclaimed SK chairman in Barangay 7 in Casiguran, Aurora after three coin tosses.

Agabao and Noriel Torre were tied at 52 votes each.

In Zambales, Jenelyn Dalit and Jemimah Faith Gongo both garnered 62 votes for SK chairperson in Barangay San Guillermo in San Marcelino town.

The two agreed to resolve the deadlock with a one-time coin flip, which was facilitated by the municipal board of canvassers.

Dalit, who sought reelection, picked heads while Gongora chose tails. Luck favored Dalit.

The losers accepted their fate.

Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman George Garcia said there should be no delay in proclaiming the winners in the barangay and SK elections.

Under Section 71 of Comelec Resolution No. 9030, drawing of lots shall determine the winner in case of a tie.

A coin toss has since been a popular method used to settle a tie.
