MANILA, Philippines — Three earthquakes rocked Surigao del Sur and neighboring areas yesterday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

Phivolcs said the first quake, measuring magnitude-4, occurred at 8:53 a.m.

The epicenter of the quake, which was tectonic in origin, was located some 17 kilometers south of Madrid town.

The quake was felt at Intensity 1 in the nearby municipality of Lanuza.

The second quake, measuring magnitude-4.8, occurred at 8:56 a.m.

Its epicenter was located also in Madrid.

State seismologists recorded a third temblor at 9:48 a.m., measuring magnitude-4.3.

Instrumental intensity 2 was recorded in Surigao City in Surigao del Norte and Cabadbaran in Agusan del Norte. The quakes were not expected to generate aftershocks or cause damage to property, Phiolcs said.
