PNP: 20 kidnappings in 2023
MANILA, Philippines — Twenty kidnapping incidents were recorded by the Philippine National Police (PNP) in 2023, victimizing mostly Chinese nationals.
Brig. Gen. Cosme Abrenica, Anti-Kidnapping Group director, said 15 of the 20 cases the AKG documented since January this year were resolved while the remaining five are under investigation.
“Meron Korean, Taiwanese but majority are Chinese,” he said in a press briefing at Camp Crame.
The AKG released the figures in response to reports that kidnapping incidents in the Philippines are under-reported.
However, Abrenica said the AKG could not take action if the victims do not report them.
PNP chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. said police regularly coordinate with the Chinese community, particularly with Movement for Restoration of Peace and Order founding chairperson Teresita Ang See, on the issue.
“We are not turning our back on this problem,” Acorda said.
