ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — An alleged medical officer of the New People’s Army (NPA) has surrendered to the military, authorities said yesterday.

The medic, identified only as Agpol, turned over an assault rifle and ammunition to the military in Upi town on Sunday, according to Western Mindanao Command chief Maj. Gen. Steve Crespillo.

During a debriefing, Agpol said he could no longer bear what he described as deceit, lies and struggles of the communist group.

Crespillo said troopers of the Army’s 57th Infantry Battalion helped facilitate the surrender of Agpol.

The military gave assurance that Agpol would be included in the government’s enhanced comprehensive local integration program, which helps rebels return to mainstream society and live a normal life.
