NPA leader slain in Sultan Kudarat clash
COTABATO CITY, Philippines — Local government officials in Sultan Kudarat urged yesterday the remaining communist rebels in the town to surrender as the military confirmed the death of the Far South Mindanao Region Command of the New People’s Army.
Ray Masot Zambrano, who is wanted for more than a dozen criminal cases in various courts in Soccsksargen, was killed in an encounter with soldiers in Barangay Obial in Kalamansig town on Tuesday.
Brig. Gen Michael Santos, 603rd Infantry Brigade commander, said soldiers were deployed in the area after residents of Kalamansig reported the presence of the rebels.
The military said an AK47 rifle and a .45-caliber were recovered at the scene.
Army units and local government officials in Kalamansig, Lebak and Palimbang towns said 126 NPA rebels have surrendered in the past 14 months.
