CAMP FLORENDO, La Union, Philippines — A candidate for barangay captain in Laoag City in Ilocos Norte was arrested yesterday for alleged possession of illegal drugs.

Wendel Tamayo, an incumbent barangay councilman, reportedly yielded shabu, a sachet of marijuana and drug paraphernalia during a raid on his house in Barangay 4.

Operatives of the Laoag police and Provincial Drug Enforcement Unit conducted the operation.

Tamayo denied that he was involved in illegal drugs, saying the raid was politically motivated.

Meanwhile, shabu worth P1.7 million was recovered from Halima Ali Kamad in a sting in Esperanza, Sultan Kudarat on Friday, according to Soccsksargen police director Brig. Gen. Jimili Macaraeg.
