BACOLOD CITY, Philippines —Several schools in Negros Occidental have required their students and personnel to wear face masks again due to rising flu-like cases.

Ian Arnold Arnaiz, public information officer of the Department of Education-Negros Occidental, yesterday confirmed that the Negros Occidental High School in Bacolod City required the wearing of face masks.

Arnaiz said the wearing of face masks was recommended by the school’s medical team after noting that a majority of students are manifesting symptoms of flu-like illness.

Private schools STI-West Negros University and University of Negros Occidental Recoletos, both in Bacolod City, as well as the Efigenio Enrica Lizares Memorial School in Talisay City also mandated their students to wear face masks, especially those who have cough.

Students who feel ill are immediately sent home to prevent the possibility of infecting the entire campus.

Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson yesterday renewed calls for Negrenses to wear face masks.

“The wearing of face masks is something we learned during the COVID-19 pandemic. It did not only protect us from COVID, but from other viruses,” Lacson said.
